Citizen Posse Captures Baker Hooligan
Denver, Sept 5, 2010 – Five neighbors chased a local hooligan through the Baker Historic District Saturday evening, ending in the vagrant’s capture and arrest fifteen minutes and six blocks from where the foot pursuit began.
911 received the call at 6:29 p.m. The caller and another man, John Daniel, requested police as they pursued a man known throughout the neighborhood as “Steve the bicycle thief.” The caller reported that Steve had opened the door at Karma Asian Cuisine, 22 S. Broadway, ripped a Republican House District 2 political candidate’s poster from the inside door, then raced away onto Broadway running northbound to Ellsworth Avenue.
Steve’s timing couldn’t have been worse. John Daniel, who lives in Baker and supports the House District 2 candidate, had just arrived at Karma for dinner. “Hey! Hey! Hey!” a diner yelled. Daniel, a heart attack survivor, raced out the door and north on Broadway
Steve, a hooligan known by many Baker residents, ran through the oncoming Broadway traffic. Other citizens recognized Steve. One called 911 and they joined Daniel, following Steve into the alley between Acoma and Bannock. The group of three citizens called in coordinates to 911 as the chase headed north on Acoma, west on First, onto Bannock St, and another alley between Second and Third Ave.
A man photographing his daughter in his back yard heard a commotion near his car. He asked what Steve was doing to his car, then instantly realized his civic duty and sprinted up the alley with his friend, bringing fresh legs to the chase. The citizens then easily ran down Steve and tackled him.
As Steve struggled, someone in the posse shouted “Don’t hurt him. Hold him for the police.” When police arrived a moment later, Steve lay on the ground where he was handcuffed and taken into custody. He denied all accusations against him and was ticketed and jailed for Trespass and Disturbing the Peace.
Several of Daniel’s neighbors recognized him before policed arrived and offered their help as well. DPD Officer Sisneros called it a happy ending, and noted the civic involvement in the community . “Nobody got hurt,” he said. Not even Steve. Daniel returned to Karma, hungrier, rejoined his wife, Pat, and enjoyed the Honey Prawns and a beer.
(Denver, June 18) State Senator Pat Steadman (D-Denver), Representative Mark Ferrandino (D-Denver) and Doc Miller, Ferrandino’s Republican challenger, made a bold bi-partisan campaign pledge to legalize marijuana at a raucous town hall meeting June 16 at the Athmar Public Library.
Miller challenged the currently serving Colorado Congressmen to advocate legislation to legalize marijuana. The 15 citizens attending applauded the three politicians for their bi-partisan courage.
Miller was accused of “hijacking” the meeting by demanding the right to speak in the town hall setting. District 2 citizens joined in the debate. Voices rose as Farrandino claimed the other citizens, most of them Republicans, could not change his meeting “agenda.”
Others argued for their right to participate in the public meeting. Miller offered to hold his remarks. A dozen citizens joined in the meeting to pepper Steadman and Ferrandino with questions and comments ranging from license plate registration hikes and budget shortfalls, to schools and crime.
In response to Senator Steadman’s careful explanation of the legislature’s efforts to reform drug sentencing and thus reduce incarceration costs, Miller argued for the legalization of marijuana. He claimed Democrats only changed sentencing laws because, “They realize our prisons are overflowing.”
Miller called medical marijuana licensing a “debacle” and a “cowardly” approach to the real issue of legalizing marijuana as the common sense response to the failed drug war.
