CAMPAIGN BBQ
SEPTEMBER 18, 2010
A Campaign Poem
"CHIHUAHUAS"
by Doc Miller
There are, indisputably,
more than you think
in the barrios
of Denver's Westside.
They come barking . . .
No. No, they yap, yap,
yap, yap, yap, yap, yap
in vituperative cries.
"Shut up!" Mamacita commands
from her cool, dark living room.
A chihuahua leaps into her arms
doe-eyed and shivering.
Who's afraid of a chihuahua?
No one. But . . .
Who's afraid of chihuahuas?
Chihuahuas y muchas chihuahuas,
Un torrente de chihuahuas.
Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris,
even the Governator
best beware of chihuahuas.
They pop open the screen door,
streaming out, a tsunami
of killer bees, a pack
of dental drills on your sandals.
Cavities of tiny mouths
taste blood, remove toenails
and shred leather.
Chihuahaus snarl and twirl,
slip, trip and charge from behind
to bring their eager mouths
closer to your eyes.
"Please, lady, please
I'm Doc Miller . . . campaigning,
knocking on doors.
Please, lady! Please!
Call off your chihuahuas!"
